"No people will tamely surrender their Liberties, nor can any be easily subdued, when knowledge is diffused and Virtue is preserved. On the Contrary, when People are universally ignorant, and debauched in their Manners, they will sink under their own weight without the Aid of foreign Invaders." --Samuel Adams

The Dodgy Miss Kagan
by Dana Milbank
Fifteen years ago, Elena Kagan wrote a law review article calling the Supreme Court confirmation process "a vapid and hollow charade" that takes on "an air of vacuity and farce." Instead of a quality discussion, she wrote, nominees offer "repetition of platitudes" and "personal anecdotes." On Tuesday, fate cast Kagan as the lead actor in the very farce she correctly described. And, to nobody's surprise, she played the role according to the standard script: with platitudes, personal anecdotes and an air of vacuity...

Avertible Catastrophe
by Lawrence Solomon
...The Americans, overwhelmed by the catastrophic consequences of the BP spill, finally relented and took the Dutch up on their offer -- but only partly. Because the U.S. didn't want Dutch ships working the Gulf, the U.S. airlifted the Dutch equipment to the Gulf and then retrofitted it to U.S. vessels. And rather than have experienced Dutch crews immediately operate the oil-skimming equipment, to appease labour unions the U.S. postponed the clean-up operation to allow U.S. crews to be trained.
A catastrophe that could have been averted is now playing out...

Orthodox Rabbis Say Kagan Not Kosher for Supreme Court
...the Rabbinical Alliance of America, an organization representing more than 850 traditional Orthodox Jewish rabbis in the United States, declared President Obama's Supreme Court nominee, Elena Kagan, "not kosher" -- that is to say, unfit to serve on the nation's highest court. In fact, the Orthodox rabbis took their condemnation one step further, saying, "Elena Kagan is not kosher. She is not fit to sit on this Court -- or any court"...
Senators Propose Granting President Emergency Internet Power
by Declan McCullagh
A new U.S. Senate bill would grant the president far-reaching emergency powers to seize control of or even shut down portions of the Internet. The legislation announced Thursday says that companies such as broadband providers, search engines, or software firms that the government selects "shall immediately comply with any emergency measure or action developed" by the Department of Homeland Security. Anyone failing to comply would be fined...

Learning the Rules of an Unengaged President
by Merk Steyn
...There are 2,000 oil skimmers in the United States: Weeks after the spill, only 20 of them are off the coast of Florida. Seventeen friendly nations with great expertise in the field have offered their own skimmers...Obama turned them all down. Raising the problem, Sen. Lemieux found the president unengaged, and uninformed. "He doesn't seem to know the situation about foreign skimmers and domestic skimmers," reported the senator. He doesn't seem to know, and he doesn't seem to care that he doesn't know, and he doesn't seem to care that he doesn't care. "It can seem that at the heart of Barack Obama's foreign policy is no heart at all"...

Obama's Greek Tragedy
by Victor Davis Hanson
...For nearly two years, senator, candidate and freshman President Obama ridiculed his predecessor -- as if running the United States were as easy a job as community organizing, serving a couple of years in the Senate or campaigning for president. But now the once-enthralled electorate is starting to tire of the hope-and-change platitudes, and even of the easy blame-gaming of his predecessor, mostly because almost everything Obama once demagogued in weird fashion is coming back to haunt him...

What People Pay Tony Podesta $1,000 an Hour to Do
by Jonathan Strong
Tony Podesta is in the news because he lobbies for BP, public enemy No. 1 in President Obama’s Washington after a BP-rented oil rig blew up and started gushing oil into the Gulf of Mexico 63 days ago...Tony and Heather Podesta are like spies in the Democratic camp, dishing cap-and-trade battle plans to companies such as BP, Marathon Oil, and Sunoco...Tony helped mining conglomerate Coeur D’Alene Mines when Obama environment officials had problems with one of its planned projects: dumping mining slurry into a remote alpine lake in Alaska, killing all the fish...The Podestas made a lot of money on the president’s health-care law. Heather lobbied for insurance giant Cigna, “monitoring” the health-care reform effort...Heather has donated $100,500 to Democrats this election cycle. Tony has donated $92,550 this cycle to Democrats.

Rahm Emanuel 'Traded Political Favours With Rod Blagojevich'
by Michele Walk
Mr Emanuel published an endorsement of Mr Blagojevich in the Chicago Tribune in exchange for $2 million (£1.3 million) in school funding to his district, according to the emails, which were released on Monday. The newspaper had recently claimed in an editorial that Mr Blagojevich used public funds to support his re-election campaign. Mr Blagojevich, who was re-elected in 2006 but resigned in 2009, is currently on trial in Illinois on corruption charges. He is alleged to have attempted to sell Mr Obama's former Senate seat.

Al, Tipper and the Myth of a 'Good Divorce'
by Michael Medved
...The problem with platitudes about the good divorce is that they inevitably encourage marital breakup, just as the myth that half of marriages are bound to fail discourages wedlock. If we kept the situation in honest perspective, high-profile separating couples like the Gores shouldn’t reassure potentially divorcing couples, or in any way alarm the American majority who work to sustain their long-term marriages.

When Good People Do Bad Things
by Dennis Prager
...when you give people something for nothing, you produce ungrateful people; that when you obscure the differences between men and women, you end up with many aimless men and angry women; that when you give children "self-esteem" without their earning it, you produce narcissists who enter adulthood incapable of handling life; that if you do not destroy evil, it will proliferate; and that if you are kind to the cruel, you will cruel to the kind. If you really want good to prevail, the key is wisdom, not the heart...

Mexican Gangs Maintain Permanent Lookout Bases in Hills of Arizona
by Adam Housley
...“Every night we’re getting beaten like a pinata at a birthday party by drug, alien smugglers," a second federal agent told Fox News by e-mail. "The danger is out there, with all the weapons being found coming northbound…. someone needs to know about this!” The agents blame part of their plight on new policies from Washington, claiming it has put a majority of the U.S. agents on the border itself...

Five Federal Lands in Arizona Have Travel Warnings in Place
by Joshua Rhett Miller
Imagine the federal government closing a section of the Lincoln Memorial because it was under the control of Mexican drug lords and bands of illegal immigrants. That scenario is playing out as reality in southern Arizona, where parts of five federal lands -- including two designated national monuments -- continue to post travel warnings or be outright closed to Americans who own the land because of the dangers of "human and drug trafficking" along the Mexican border...

Five Myths on Fathers and Family
by W. Bradford Wilcox
...Not surprisingly, children benefit from being exposed to the distinctive paternal style. Sociologist David Eggebeen has shown, for instance, that teenagers are significantly less likely to suffer from depression and delinquency when they have involved and affectionate fathers, even after controlling for the quality of their relationship with their mother. In his words, “What these analyses clearly show is that mothers and fathers both make vital contributions to adolescent well-being”...
Coast Guard Shuts Down Successful Oil Removal Operation
by David Muir & Bradley Blackburn

Guess Who Holds Patent for Carbon-Trading Plan
by Jerome R. Corsi
Former Clinton and Obama budget adviser Franklin Raines owns a key carbon-emissions patent he developed as CEO of the government-sponsored mortgage giant Fannie Mae, positioning him and his partners to make millions of dollars if it is used in any carbon-capping scheme implemented by the Obama administration. Raines and his associates led Fannie Mae and Congress to believe Fannie Mae owned the patent, despite public records to the contrary...

Fact Check: Obama's Speech
by Calvin Woodward
In assuring Americans on Tuesday that BP won't control the compensation fund for Gulf oil spill recovery, President Barack Obama failed to mention that the government won't control it, either. That means it's anyone's guess whether the government can, in fact, make BP pay all costs related to the spill...

Spill Reveals Obama's Lack of Executive Experience
by Byron York
...The oil leak in the Gulf of Mexico is gushing out of control. The Obama administration is at first slow to see the seriousness of the accident. Then, as the crisis becomes clear, the federal bureaucracy becomes entangled in itself trying to deal with the problem. "At least a dozen federal agencies have taken part in the spill response," the New York Times reports, "making decision-making slow, conflicted and confused, as they sought to apply numerous federal statutes." For example, it took the Department of Homeland Security more than a week to classify the spill as an event calling for the highest level of federal action...

BP Adviser Owns Rahm Emanuel's Rent-Free D.C. Apartment
by Andrew Malcolm
In case you were tempted to buy the faux Washington outrage at BP and its gulf oil spill in recent days, here's a story that reveals a little-known corporate political connection and the quiet way the inner political circles intersect, protect and care for one another in the nation's capital. And Chicago. We already knew that BP and its folks were significant contributors to the record $750-million war chest of Barack Obama's 2007-08 campaign. Now, we learn the details of a connection of Rahm Emanuel, the Chicago mayoral wannabe, current Obama chief of staff, ex-representative, ex-Clinton money man and ex-Windy City political machine go-fer...

A Mosque at Ground Zero? Insane
by Rod Dreher
...Of course it is wrong to blame all Muslims for 9/11. But why on earth rub salt in the wounds of the 9/11 dead by allowing a mosque to go in just two blocks from where jihadists incinerated or crushed over 2,700 innocent victims, in service of their faith? Proponents of the project call it a "seed of peace", but tell me, would they call a Shinto shrine at Pearl Harbor a seed of peace? Would they call a German cultural center two blocks from the gates of Auschwitz a seed of peace? There are some things you just don't do, no matter how well-intentioned...

Oil Spill Tests Obama's Management Style
by Glenn Thrush and Carol E. Lee
..“They need to separate this into two pieces: stopping the leak, which is BP’s responsibility, and the clean-up, which is the government’s job — but the Obama administration hasn’t figured this out yet,” Sununu said. “All you need from BP for the cleanup is a check. They shouldn’t be involved otherwise.” “This is an administration that believes in management by rhetoric," he added. "They really haven’t come to grips with this”...

DNC, Obama Now Astroturfing Talk Radio
by John Sexon
The shameless media manipulators at the DNC have a new campaign designed to promote Elena Kagan for the Supreme Court. As with previous campaigns, the “Kagan for Justice Action Center” is run via a special website set up by Organizing for America. It encourages people to write letters to the editors of newspapers nationwide (And we can presume that,as before, local newspapers will publish DNC talking points without realizing it).
